West Plains- Highway 160 & Highway 63 Detention Basin Analysis

At the recommendation of the City of West Plains, a private developer, Southern Hills Development Inc., secured the services of Toth & Associates to conduct a hydraulic analysis of an existing stormwater detention basin at the corner of US Highway 160 and US Highway 63 in West Plains, Missouri. The detention basin is currently owned by the Missouri Department of Transportation; however, the developer was interested in determining the feasibility of developing the land in future. TOTH’s analysis began by developing a HEC-1 model of the existing detention basin to determine the actual amount of stormwater detained during 2, 10, 25, and 100-year return frequency rainfall events. Once the existing conditions were known, TOTH determined how much of the site could be developed while maintaining detention capacity. A summary report was developed and submitted to the developer to help guide its decision to move forward with purchase of the land.
