City of Springfield- Gelven Withers Stormwater Improvements

Stormwater Management, Civil, Projects

Description:
Due to an existing sinkhole, the Gelven Withers Subdivision has historically been impacted by localized flooding. Approximately 60 acres of residential development drain into the existing sinkhole. In the 1980’s the City of Springfield installed a pump adjacent to the sinkhole in an attempt to alleviate flooding; however, flooding has persisted. In 2017, the City of Springfield partnered with TOTH to study the flooding problems and develop a plan for improvements. The project consisted of the hydrologic, hydraulic, and geophysical analysis of the existing sinkhole and the development of alternatives to relieve flooding in the area. TOTH’s proposed improvements include excavating approximately 7,500 cubic yard of earth material out of several City owned properties to provide additional storage volume around the sinkhole. In addition, a new stormwater collection and conveyance system consisting of 1,500 linear feet of storm sewer pipe and 20 inlets will be installed in the neighborhood to convey stormwater away from the homes and into the newly excavated storage area.
